Los Angeles County

CASTAIC LAKE--Steve Blatnic, Glendale, 16-pound striped bass on live shad caught from a dip net. Several slightly smaller stripers were caught. Dan Brinkman, Canyon County, 19-5 catfish on a waterdog. Largemouth bass are biting mostly on live baits, but dark plastic worms are working too.

PYRAMID LAKE--No report.

Ventura County

LAKE CASITAS--Smaller bass are active and biting readily on live shad and pretty much ignoring anything else. Leo Helfrich, Santa Barbara, five trout totaling 10-3 on Needlefish. Catfish action is fair.

LAKE PIRU--Night crawlers and plastic worms are producing lots of bass strikes. Trout anglers are getting an occasional fish using shad-pattern Rapalas or Needlefish. You have to be here early.

Santa Barbara County

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout remain the best bet and night crawlers, Power Bait and Needlefish are getting them. Bass action is slow and red-ear perch action is fair on night crawlers at about 20 feet.

Orange County

IRVINE LAKE--Rapalas, night crawlers and Power Bait are producing the most lunker trout, but fishing is only fair. Catfish action is fair too, for mostly two-pound fish.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Catfish are stocked Fridays, and weekend night fishing is superb. Early mornings and late afternoons are fair. Bass fishing is OK on crankbaits and spinnerbaits. Some trout and crappie.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--The lakes are boasting wide-open bites on catfish, citing two tons planted each week. The fish are small but apparently hungry.

Riverside County

CORONA LAKE--Catfish action at night is best on mackerel and marshmallow-mealworm combos. A 12-pounder tops the list. A few trout are still being caught. Some crappie and bluegill.

LAKE PERRIS--Bass action is fair for those using waterdogs and crawdads. A few bass have topped 10 pounds. Bluegill action is good on crickets and waxworms, primarily at the east end.

LAKE SKINNER--Striped bass and catfish are providing fair action. A 46-pound stringer of stripers, topped by a 6-8, was caught on anchovies. A 10-2 catfish caught on a cheese-anchovy combo.

San Bernardino County

BIG BEAR LAKE--A great place to trout fish, with many rainbows weighing in at five pounds or more. Trollers using Needlefish are getting most, but rainbow Power Bait enticed a 6-11.

GREEN VALLEY LAKE--Top trout was a 7-4 caught by Jessica Hightower of Cabazon on green-glitter Power Bait. Fishing is pretty good.

JESS RANCH LAKES--Trout and catfish are providing fair action and Power Bait is getting some bluegill as well as trout.

San Diego County

LAKE CUYAMACA--Trout are cooperating at the Lone Pine Tree and North Shore. A 6-4 and 5-8 were caught on woolly bugger flies at the dam. Night crawlers are best for bait fishermen.

DIXON LAKE--A lake-record 26-pound 15-ounce catfish was caught by a trout fisherman using Power Bait. Catfish are getting active. Bass and trout are getting sluggish.

LAKE POWAY--Bass, bluegill and trout are cooperating to some extent, but fishing is only fair. Go deep for trout. Night fishing begins tonight. The lake will be open till 11:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--No really big bass were caught and the bites have slowed at all but El Capitan and San Vicente. Best bet is the bluegill bite at Lower Otay, but catfish action is good at Sutherland and Hodges.

LAKE WHOLFORD--A catfish plant is scheduled Monday. Meanwhile, most are targeting trout and bass with fair success on the standard stuff.

Eastern Sierra

Crowley Lake is providing great action on Power Bait and Needlefish, but the entire region is producing. Convict Lake produced a 5-4 and many slightly smaller trout. In the Mammoth Lakes area, the roads to San Joaquin River, Sotcher and Starkweather lakes remained closed as of midweek. Steve Cappello, Camarillo, a 5-13 rainbow on rainbow Power Bait at Grant. Joan Demaio, Thousand Oaks, a 6-pound rainbow on rainbow Power Bait at Gull. A 2 1/2-pound brown was caught at Grant. Virginia Lakes are producing fish to 2 1/2 pounds. Twin Lakes are yielding mostly pan-sized rainbows.

SALTWATER

MORRO BAY (Virg’s Landing)-- 36 anglers (1 boat): 100 red rock cod, 88 rock cod, 100 rockfish.

AVILA BEACH (Patriot Sportfishing)-- 9 anglers (1 boat): 22 rockfish, 62 red rock cod, 6 rock cod.

OXNARD (Cisco’s)-- 114 anglers (6 boats): 107 white seabass, 30 white fish, 3 sheephead, 26 rockfish, 12 red snapper, 1 lingcod, 3 halibut, 54 calico bass, 7 barracuda.

PORT HUENEME-- 16 anglers (1 boat): 16 white seabass.

MARINA DEL REY-- 77 anglers (5 boats): 15 halibut, 23 white seabass, 82 calico bass, 26 sand bass, 2 barracuda.

REDONDO BEACH-- 53 anglers (4 boats): 14 white seabass, 173 calico bass, 15 sand bass, 3 barracuda, 2 rockfish.

SAN PEDRO (L.A. Harbor Sportfishing)-- 87 anglers (4 boats): 1 white seabass, 64 calico bass, 183 sand bass, 155 barracuda, 2 sheephead, 1 halibut. (22nd St. Landing)-- 105 anglers (4 boats): 240 calico bass, 16 sand bass, 60 barracuda.

LONG BEACH (Sportfishing/Berth 55)--52 anglers (4 boats): 80 barracuda, 8 calico bass, 264 sand bass, 3 rockfish, 8 sculpin, 4 sand dabs. (Marina Sportfishing)-- 90 anglers (4 boats): 3 yellowtail, 73 barracuda, 90 calico bass, 113 sand bass, 20 whitefish, 4 sculpin, 8 sheephead, 45 blue perch, 3 halibut. (Belmont Pier)-- 10 anglers (1 boat): 1 halibut, 100 sand bass. (Pierpoint Landing)-- 39 anglers (4 boats): 8 white seabass, 38 barracuda, 12 calico bass, 5 sculpin, 244 sand bass.

SEAL BEACH (Big Fish)-- 27 anglers (2 boats): 1 barracuda, 196 sand bass, 6 sculpin, 1 white seabass.

NEWPORT BEACH (Newport Landing)--81 anglers (5 boats): 3 yellowtail, 9 barracuda, 34 calico bass, 423 sand bass, 1 halibut, 4 sculpin, 1 whitefish. (Davey’s Locker)--153 anglers (7 boats): 528 sand bass, 240 calico bass, 372 barracuda, 3 sheephead, 1 halibut, 6 sculpin, 1 bonito.

DANA WHARF-- 111 anglers (6 boats): 173 calico bass, 119 sand bass, 4 barracuda, 11 halibut, 1 white seabass, 23 sculpin, 8 mackerel.

OCEANSIDE-- (Helgren’s)--133 anglers (5 boats): 122 calico bass, 38 sand bass, 3 sculpin, 40 mackerel.

SAN DIEGO (H&M; Landing, Fisherman’s, Point Loma)-- 138 anglers (8 boats): 1 bluefin tuna, 16 yellowtail, 283 albacore. (Islandia)--118 anglers (4 boats): 63 albacore, 3 barracuda, 3 yellowtail, 23 calico bass, 8 rockfish, 90 mackerel.
