Hundreds Flee Flooding in Pyrenees
LYON, France — Hundreds of people were evacuated from southern France and the Pyrenees Mountains over the weekend, after violent rains and snowstorms caused flooding and a bus accident that left at least one person dead Sunday.
Rains had mostly stopped Sunday, but hundreds of homes were left without electricity. France’s national power company, EDF, was working to restore power to 700 homes in the southeastern Rhone-Alps region.
A bus traveling on an elevated highway near the southwestern city of Toulouse jumped the guardrail and plunged to the road below, police said. One person was killed, and several were injured.
About 200 students were evacuated from a university on Ramier Island, near Toulouse, on Saturday, and 100 people were evacuated from campsites near the Loire Valley’s Coise River.
Several homes and campsites in the Ariege region, near the Pyrenees, were also evacuated.
