Israel TV Airs From Damascus
JERUSALEM — Israel Television on Tuesday aired what it called its “first direct broadcast from Damascus,” interviewing via satellite an Arab Israeli legislator who was in Syria for President Hafez Assad’s funeral.
State-owned Channel One did not say if the transmission was made with the knowledge of Syrian authorities, who allowed international satellite TV coverage of the funeral.
Ahmed Tibi, the legislator interviewed by an anchorman in Jerusalem, said the broadcast was a sign of “a developing Syrian society heading toward modernization and openness in all spheres.”
