The City Council has earmarked $250,000 for installing filters in 393 storm drains in the city.
The city began last summer to equip all drains with filters, which are intended to capture oil and gas before it gets to the ocean. The filters can also catch styrofoam cups, leaves and other debris. But the filters do not halt the flow of microorganisms, such as the bacteria that have caused recent beach closures. The program does not include private street drains, estimated to be as numerous as the city’s drains, said Public Works Director Bob Warren.
City staffers are examining how best to deal with the privately owned drains.
