A group of 72 Placentia-Yorba Linda school district employees, most of them teachers, will retire this year under a special package offered to them to reduce payroll costs, officials said this week.

The district has already hired replacements for most of the vacant positions.

“This is nothing unusual,” said Asst. Supt. Tim VanEck. “All districts do this every two to four years.”

Among those retiring, 61 are teachers, and 11 occupy managerial positions such as principal, assistant principal and advisor.

According to VanEck, the average teacher leaving makes $60,000, in contrast to the $37,000 paid new teachers. The district now employs 2,500 people.
