Guy Charron Named Assistant Coach by Mighty Ducks

Guy Charron has been hired as a Mighty Duck assistant coach, the club announced Thursday.

Charron spent seven seasons in the NHL, mostly as an assistant with the Calgary Flames and New York Islanders. He also was the Flames’ interim head coach for 16 games in the 1991-92 season.

Last season, Charron led the Grand Rapids Griffins to the Turner Cup championship. He was named the International Hockey League’s coach of the year.

FOOTBALL

Terry Henigan, who made his imprint on the football program at Irvine High, is the school’s new athletic director.

Henigan replaced Erik Terry, who left to be an assistant football coach at El Toro.

Henigan was the 1999 Times’ Orange County Coach of the Year after leading his team to the Southern Section Division VI championship game. The Vaqueros lost to Newport Harbor, 19-18, preventing Henigan from winning a fourth section title in the 1990s. Irvine won three consecutive section championships from 1991-93.

The football program has thrived under Henigan, who is 126-72-5 at Irvine.

BASKETBALL

Orange Coast College guard/forward Erin Tomlinson said she has changed her mind and will sign with the women’s team at UC Irvine, rather than attempt to walk on at Long Beach State.

Tomlinson, who helped Bakersfield Stockdale High to a 1998 Central Section title, averaged 10.5 points and seven rebounds at Orange Coast, which went 27-6 last season.

BASEBALL

Calvary Chapel baseball Coach Joe Walters, who led the Eagles to two Southern Section titles, is leaving to teach and coach at a school opening this fall near Mesa, Ariz.

Walters, who was also Calvary Chapel’s athletic director, led the Eagles to five Olympic League titles and section Division V championships in 1995 and ’99. During his 11-year tenure, his record was 148-45.

Mike Rausch, the school’s golf coach and also an assistant football coach, will replace Walters as athletic director.

ADMINISTRATION

UC Irvine director of compliance Keith Shackleford said Thursday that he has accepted the job as athletic director at Santa Monica College and begins his new position July 10.
