Georgetown Wins in Three Overtimes

Gharun Hester made a three-point shot from the right corner with 31 seconds left in the third overtime for the decisive basket in Georgetown’s 115-111 victory over Virginia in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament on Wednesday night at Charlottesville, Va.

Georgetown (19-14) rallied to tie it in regulation and had last-chance shots in the first overtimes. In the third overtime, Hester’s basket gave the Hoyas a 112-109 lead. Anthony Perry made a free throw with 14 seconds left. Virginia (19-12) pulled within two on Adam Hall’s putback with 6.8 seconds left, then fouled Kevin Braswell with 6.2 left. The Cavaliers caught a break when Braswell missed his second shot, but threw the ball away. Braswell scored a career-high 40 points.

Arizona State 83, New Mexico State 77--Eddie House scored 32 points, 22 in the second half as the Sun Devils (19-12) rallied from a 16-point halftime deficit to defeat the Aggies (22-10) at Tempe, Ariz.

Notre Dame 75, Michigan 65--Troy Murphy scored 32 points--12 from the free-throw line--as the Fighting Irish (19-14) defeated the Wolverines (15-14) at South Bend, Ind.

Penn State 55, Princeton 41--Joe Crispin and Jarrett Stephens each scored 11 points as the Nittany Lions (16-15) held the Tigers (19-11) to 32% shooting at State College, Pa.

Xavier 67, Marquette 63--Maurice McAfee made a three-point shot and a free throw in the final two minutes, and the Muskateers (21-11) overcame a 10-point deficit against the Golden Eagles (15-14) at Cincinnati.

Mississippi 62, North Carolina Charlotte 45--Marcus Hicks scored 14 points, and the Rebels (18-12) held the 49ers (17-16) without a field goal for seven minutes in the first half at Oxford, Miss.

Villanova 72, Delaware 63--Malik Allen scored 16 points to go with 16 rebounds, and Gary Buchanan scored 18 as the Wildcats (20-12) fought off the Blue Hens (24-8) at Villanova, Pa.

Brigham Young 81, Bowling Green 54--Terrell Lyday scored all 15 points of his points on five-of-six three-point shooting, and Michael Vranes had 14 points as the Cougars (21-10) defeated the Falcons (22-8) at Provo, Utah.
