SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO

The protests over the decision to end the year-round program at Harold Ambuehl Elementary School may be renewed at tonight’s Capistrano Unified school board meeting, as angry parents say they will readdress the issue.
“I want people to realize what has transpired, how the board got to the point of shutting us down” in the decision earlier this month, Ambuehl parent Kim Herkewitz said.
The issue reached a boiling point when trustees reverted Ambuehl and San Juan Elementary School in San Juan Capistrano to traditional calendars, citing a savings of $331,000. The cut, which didn’t affect two other year-round schools in the district, is part of an effort to slice $3 million from the district’s budget.
