Youth Gets 11 Years in Stabbing Death
One of the six youths accused of the stabbing death of a 17-year-old boy at a 1998 birthday party in Encino was sentenced Thursday to 11 years in prison, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.
Peter Makjdomian, now 19, was sentenced by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Tricia Ann Bigelow after he pleaded no contest to the voluntary manslaughter of Abtin Tangestanifar.
The sentence was proper and just, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Laura Rosenthal. Makjdomian would have faced 25 years to life in prison if convicted of first-degree murder.
Tangestanifar died after an attack by a group of youths, some of whom were gang members, outside a “Sweet 16” party at a million-dollar home.
Makjdomian, who has almost two years’ credit for time already served, could be released on parole in about 7 1/2 more years, Rosenthal said. A hearing on April 11 will determine whether Makjdomian must pay restitution to Tangestanifar’s family for funeral expenses.
Another defendant, Ari Tomasian, was convicted of second-degree murder after a jury trial earlier this month.
