Griffin Players Reach League Tennis Final
Los Alamitos’ John Mano and George Canete won two matches Sunday in the Sunset League boys’ tennis finals at the Lindborg Racquet Club in Huntington Beach to advance to today’s title match.
Kanete defeated Jeff Malawy of Edison in the quarterfinals, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, then had a straight-set victory in the semifinals.
BASEBALL
Concordia received the fifth and final spot in Region II and will play at second-seeded Biola at 3 p.m. today in the opening round of the NAIA baseball playoffs.
In today’s other playoff opener, third-seeded Azusa Pacific hosts No. 4 Point Loma Nazarene. The winners play Tuesday at the home field of the highest remaining seed.
BOYS’ WATER POLO
Michael Casagrande of Villa Park, an All-Century League performer, has signed a letter of intent to attend Pepperdine.
CROSS-COUNTRY
Joan Hansen-Lester has resigned as men’s and women’s cross-country and track coach at Concordia to pursue other coaching opportunities, the school announced Sunday.
Hansen-Lester coached four years and led the women’s cross-country team to the 1999 Golden State Athletic Conference championship.
She was also GSAC cross-country co-coach of the year in 1997 and GSAC and NAIA Region I/II cross-country coach of the year in 1999. Hansen-Lester was a 1984 Olympian in the 3,000 meters.
