Browne Provides Clout as Pierce Coasts, 35-13

Nick Browne hit home runs from each side of the plate in the seventh inning and drove in 10 runs, and Pierce College defeated Cerro Coso, 35-13, in the third game of the best-of-three Southern California Regional series Saturday at Cerro Coso.

Cerro Coso (25-16) beat Pierce, 6-5, in Game 2 earlier in the day.

It was the second consecutive day Browne hit two home runs. He also had two doubles.

Catcher Kona Sampaio had six hits for Pierce (26-13).

Cal State Northridge 14, Washington State 2--Jason Watkins hit a two-run home run and doubled for Northridge in a nonconference game at Washington State.

Sophomore Tim Arroyo, who entered as the Matadors’ third-best hitter with a .350 average, was three for three, including his eighth home run in the fifth inning. Arroyo drove in two runs and scored three times.

Junior Bobby Graves (2-1) scattered eight hits and had four strikeouts for Northridge (22-32), which picked up its first victory in the five-game season series against the Cougars (17-34).

Pepperdine 5-4, San Diego 4-7--With two outs in the bottom of the 12th, Austin Evans hit the game-winning single, driving in Damon Katz from second in the first game of a West Coast Conference doubleheader at Pepperdine.

Daniel Haren had seven strikeouts in nine innings, giving up eight hits and three earned runs, and Steve Schenewerk (7-2) had three strikeouts in three innings of relief.

In the second game, Dane Sardinha hit his 17th home run of the season for Pepperdine (36-21, 22-8), putting him in second on the WCC all-time home run list with 45.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Cal State Northridge 6, Utah State 4--Junior Sarah Farnworth gave up one hit and no runs and had five strikeouts in five innings of relief for the Matadors (26-24-1, 16-18) in a Big West Conference game at Logan, Utah.

MEN’S TENNIS

Pepperdine 4, Tulsa 0--Sebastien Graeff, Chase Exon and Stefan Suter recorded straight-set victories in the NCAA West Regional at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu.
