Clinton Seeks Funds for Police Safety

President Clinton, speaking at a Capitol Hill ceremony for fallen police officers, said the federal government will buy 90,000 bulletproof vests for law enforcement officials this year, and he urged Congress to fund twice that number in the future. The president also used the annual memorial service to renew his call for tougher gun-control measures. Gazing over the site of Sunday’s Million Mom March, Clinton said, “Yesterday on this mall, there were somewhere between a half a million and 750,000 mothers gathered . . . to say that we shouldn’t wait any longer for this kind of legislation. I hope we will listen to what they had to say.”
