Lee’s Death

* The reports of the death of Anthony Dwain Lee early Saturday morning shocked and saddened me (Oct. 29-30). Though I had only a brief acquaintance with Mr. Lee, he impressed me as a person who had overcome much adversity in his life and was generously encouraging others to do the same. He was an inspiring role model for many people.

In view of this, the repeated statements by the LAPD that officer Tarriel Hopper did nothing wrong seem incredibly callous. As a result of one officer’s actions, a very good human being is no longer with us. I hope that the LAPD, those who promise to protect and serve, are capable of some introspection on this point.

The tragic death of Lee reminded me of a lesson learned as a young soldier more than half a century ago: Never point a weapon at someone you are not prepared to shoot and assume that anyone pointing a weapon at you will shoot you.

Police, who spend much of their lives in hostile situations, risk death if they ignore that lesson. Lee’s death is a terrible mistake, but it was Lee’s mistake.
