Reader to Reader
I understand Dave Clayton’s position on Howard Hawks’ statements in the interview I had with him (Letters, Sept. 24). But Hawks is mythic. A myth is a combination of truth and imagination.
I might have taken a lie detector machine with me on my interviews, but if I had, Sam Peckinpah would have broken it over my head! I trust my readers to sift through the material. Of course Hawks embellishes, but that was his personality.
I’m happy Clayton praises Joe McBride. I was one of the first to publish Joe, in Film Heritage. I hope Clayton reads my book: I think he’ll like it, despite the occasional flights of fancy.
