23rd Congressional District Race

* Re “Case, Gallegly Both Lay Claim to ‘Moderate’ Label,” Oct. 1.

Your bias is painfully apparent in this article about the 23rd Congressional District race. It describes Michael Case as “the tall, gentlemanly candidate in a dark blue suit.” Later in the article, Rep. Elton Gallegly is described as “dressed in tan shoes and pants and a striped brown shirt tucked around his belly.”

Belly? I can almost see Gallegly hitching his thumbs in his overalls and spitting some tobacco juice on my shoes.

Perhaps Case is thinner and better dressed, but this sort of description really does not belong in an article purporting to be unbiased and factual. This is not a creative writing exercise. Your writer and editors need to be more judicious in using subjective, biased descriptions.

* As we near election time, it is critical that voters give thoughtful consideration to who will best serve the overall needs of our county and country. I want to commend Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley) for the tremendous hard work he has done to keep our county safe and for his ongoing support for public safety issues.

He co-sponsored the Violence Against Women Act, which has been critical in providing funding for the protection of women and children who would have otherwise gone unserved and unprotected.

In addition, Gallegly co-sponsored a Constitutional amendment to protect the rights of crime victims and has authored and co-sponsored legislation prohibiting cruelty to animals. This is particularly important because studies have shown that people who abuse women and children often have a history of abusing animals. He has also worked with Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) to push anti-gang legislation through the House and the Senate.

Gallegly’s record speaks for itself. For many years, he has consistently worked long and hard to ensure our safety within our homes and in our communities.

With his history of support for crime victims and all law-abiding Americans, he has won the endorsement of Dist. Atty. Michael Bradbury and Sheriff Bob Brooks and nearly every law enforcement organization in California.

As a career prosecutor, I am also proud to pledge my support.

* Next month, voters in the 23rd Congressional District will have an opportunity to elect a new representative, Michael Case.

Case’s positions on education, prescription drugs, privacy laws and common sense gun safety are clear.

Case supports education, whereas Elton Gallegly voted to abolish the Department of Education and voted against hiring 100,000 new teachers.

On health care, Gallegly voted against the prescription drug benefit in Medicare and against the patients’ bill of rights.

Regarding common sense gun control, Gallegly voted against the ban on semiautomatic assault weapons and, after the ban became law, he voted to repeal it.

Case believes in establishing a voluntary prescription drug benefit within Medicare so all seniors can afford the medication they need. Also, Case supports common-sense gun control.

It is time for voters in the 23rd Congressional District to elect someone to truly represent us: Michael Case for Congress.
