DirecTV Unveils TiVo Satellite Receiver
TV junkies looking for more control over their daily dose gain a new but costly option today as DirecTV rolls out satellite receivers with a built-in digital recorder from TiVo Inc. Made by Philips Electronics and priced at $400, the new receivers can pause, rewind and replay shows as they are broadcast and record up to 35 hours automatically based on viewers’ preferences. The receivers, available initially at Good Guys Inc. stores in Los Angeles and San Francisco, are hitting the market a year after DishNetwork, a rival satellite TV service from EchoStar Corp., and Microsoft Corp. introduced a satellite receiver with digital-recording capabilities. Basic DirecTV service starts at $22 per month, and the TiVo service costs up to an additional $10 per month.
