Zoetewey, Canyon Boys Enjoy Jog in Griffith Park
Nick Zoetewey set a course record and Canyon High swept the top four places in the second Foothill League meet on Thursday at Griffith Park.
Zoetewey clocked 16 minutes, 24 seconds on the three-mile course for the Cowboys (10-0 in league competition), who are ranked ninth in the nation by Harrier Magazine and No. 1 in The Times’ regional poll.
Jameson Mora was second in 16:28, Luke Llamas was third in 16:30 and sophomore Ryan Morgan also clocked 16:30 to take fourth.
Canyon beat Burbank, 19-38, Burroughs, 17-42, Hart, 16-45, Saugus, 16-47, and Valencia, 15-50.
Channel League Meet No. 2--Aaron Torres finished fourth and Buena outdistanced runner-up Ventura, 48-59, at Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura.
Phillip Kruttschnitt of Dos Pueblos was the individual winner in 16:53, followed by teammate Eric Kruttschnitt (16:57), Ventura’s Matt Gehr (17:17) and Torres (17:23).
Buena placed four other runners in the top 15.
Marmonte League Meet--Brandon Nakagawa won in 16:01 as Newbury Park had the first four finishers at the three-mile Peppertree Playfield course.
Warren Livingston (16:08) was second, Randy Smith (16:14) was third, Joe LaSecla (16:18) was fourth and Alex Omoto was eighth (16:48) for the Panthers (10-2, 3-1).
Newbury Park defeated Moorpark, 18-45, and defeated Simi Valley, 16-45. Moorpark beat Simi Valley, 21-40.
Monroe 18, San Fernando 45--Germain Ortiz, who was sixth in the 1999 City Section championships, clocked 16:16 to lead a sweep of the top four places for Monroe (4-0, 4-0) in a Valley Mission League meet on the three-mile course at Pierce College.
Juan Guzman was second in 16:46.
Birmingham 22, Cleveland 39--Lino Ortiz clocked 16:09 for the Patriots (2-0, 2-0) in a West Valley League meet at Pierce.
El Camino Real 15, Chatsworth 49--Chris Wells-Anders won in 16:12 for the Conquistadores (2-1 overall, 1-1 in league), who swept the top five spots in a West Valley League meet at Pierce.
GIRLS
Birmingham 18, Cleveland 45--Melissa Astete, three-time City Section pole vault champion, clocked 19:53 at Pierce to win for the Patriots (2-0, 2-0), who had four runners in the top five in a West Valley League meet.
North Hollywood 19, Poly 38--Natalie Stein finished first in 17:52 for the Huskies (3-0), who swept the top three places in a Sunset Six League meet at Pierce College.
Marmonte League Meet--Jennifer Turk finished in 18:45 for Newbury Park at Peppertree Playfield.
Newbury Park (9-3, 2-2) defeated Moorpark, 21-34; Simi Valley defeated Newbury Park, 26-29, and Moorpark, 17-38.
Foothill League Meet No. 2--Lauren Walker finished first in 19:54 for Canyon (10-0) at Griffith Park.
