Columbus’ First Win Comes at Calgary, 3-2
Kevyn Adams scored two goals Thursday night to lead the expansion Columbus Blue Jackets to their first victory, a 3-2 triumph over the Calgary Flames at Calgary.
Adams broke a 2-2 tie 4:13 into the third period. After Phil Housley and Marc Savard both failed on clearing attempts, the puck bounced to Adams in front of the Calgary net and he beat a sprawled goalie Mike Vernon during a scramble.
The Blue Jackets started the season with consecutive losses at home, the most recent a 7-1 rout by the Kings on Monday night, before heading to Calgary to begin a three-game trip.
Also scoring for Columbus was 18-year-old defenseman Rostislav Klesla, the first goal for the fourth pick in last June’s entry draft.
Jarome Iginla and Clarke Wilm scored for the Flames, who lost all three games in a season-opening homestand.
Calgary had a great opportunity to tie the score when the Flames got a 56-second two-man advantage midway through the third period. The Flames, though, managed only one shot on goal during the power play.
Columbus outshot Calgary, 27-21.
Colorado 5, Vancouver 2--Patrick Roy stopped 19 shots at Vancouver, Canada, and Milan Hejduk scored his first two goals as the Avalanche remained unbeaten.
Roy won for the 446th time in his career, leaving him one victory behind Terry Sawchuk for the NHL record. Roy will have a chance to tie the mark on Saturday in the home opener against the expansion Columbus Blue Jackets.
Things aren’t going nearly as well for Vancouver goalie Felix Potvin, who surrendered goals on Colorado’s first three shots. After giving up nine goals in just under five periods of play during his first two starts, Potvin looked shaky again--stopping only 18 of 23 Avalanche shots.
Detroit 4, Chicago 0--Manny Legace stopped 23 shots for his first NHL shutout and the Red Wings scored on three of their first four shots at Chicago.
Doug Brown, Sergei Fedorov and Tomas Holmstrom connected in the opening 8:39 to chase goalie Jocelyn Thibault and spoil the Blackhawks’ home opener. Brendan Shanahan added a goal with 8:02 to play.
Dallas 4, Philadelphia 1--Brett Hull scored two goals at Dallas to pass Mario Lemieux on the NHL’s all-time goal list.
Hull’s 613th goal, scored in the second period, tied him with Lemieux in eighth place.
His third-period goal moved him past the former Pittsburgh Penguin star and current Penguin owner.
San Jose 2, Phoenix 1--Brad Stuart’s rebound goal with 5:50 to play at San Jose lifted the Sharks to their first victory.
Both of the Sharks’ goals were scored by defensemen, the first by Marcus Ragnarsson.
