Recycling Group Awarded State Grant
A grant from the state Environmental Protection Agency will benefit a local bilingual oil recycling program.
El Concilio del Condado de Ventura, a Latino advocacy group, will receive $170,287 to continue its recycling outreach efforts in Latino neighborhoods.
“We do a lot of community education on recycling,” said project coordinator Avie Guerra.
For instance, El Concilio borrows the county’s mobile oil collection trailer, which teaches people not to dump oil onto their lawns or into storm drains.
“They don’t realize that oil is a known carcinogen,” Guerra said. “We’re poisoning ourselves.”
The group’s programs also include talking to kids in schools and distributing information at community fairs and special events.
The grant should fund El Concilio’s efforts for the next two years, Guerra said.
