Servite Hangs On for 38-35 Victory Over Bishop Amat
Servite defensive back Doug Middleton blocked Ryan Blackwood’s 46-yard field-goal attempt as time ran out Thursday night to preserve the Friars’ 38-35 victory over Bishop Amat in a nonleague game at Cal State Fullerton.
The game featured more than 950 yards in total offense, four lead changes and four 100-yard rushers.
“Anytime Servite and Amat play you can throw out the records,” said Servite Coach Larry Toner. “To get a win over a first-class organization like Amat is awesome.”
Despite three turnovers, Servite (6-1) rallied from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit. With eight minutes 38 seconds to play, Justin Domineck, who rushed for 131 yards in 19 carries, cut the Lancers’ lead to 35-30 with a 13-yard touchdown run. A two-point conversion try failed.
The Friars then got a break when Bishop Amat’s Joshua Chamois fumbled into the end zone after a pass reception. Servite recovered and marched 80 yards in 10 plays to take the lead on Adam Ernst’s 23-yard touchdown, his third touchdown of the game. Domineck followed by running for the two-point conversion.
Bishop Amat (1-6) drove to Servite’s 29-yard line with four seconds to play, setting the stage for Middleton’s block.
