Estrada Puts Air in Grant Victory
CANOGA PARK — How did Canoga Park High prevent the region’s second-best rushing team from beating it Friday night?
By letting a passing attack ranked No. 45 in the region do the deed.
Alfonso Estrada passed for three touchdowns and Perry Clayton rushed for 247 yards and two touchdowns to lift Grant to a 51-34 Sunset Six League victory over Canoga Park.
“Everyone knows about Perry and our potent running game,” said Grant Coach Bill Foster. “It’s about time our passing game showed up.”
Estrada connected with Carlos Mendez for a 13-yard touchdown, and hit Nick Isaak on a 54-yard scoring play that gave Grant a 21-0 lead after seven minutes. Estrada later hit Isaak for a 72-yard touchdown.
Clayton scored on runs of 73 and 38 yards as the Lancers (4-3, 2-0 in league play) led, 34-7, at halftime.
Josh Geiger scored on a 24-yard run for the Hunters (5-2, 1-1) and returned a kickoff 95 yards after a 43-yard field goal by Mendez cut the deficit to 37-26 with one minute remaining in the third quarter.
Jeremy Egan of Canoga Park, who did not start for the second consecutive week after missing practices, threw an interception to Isaak, who returned it 46 yards for a touchdown.
Egan completed 14 of 24 passes for 201 yards with one touchdown and one interception, and ran for two touchdowns.
