Monahan, Bennett

* As former deputy mayor of Ventura, I endorse my colleague Jim Monahan for supervisor in the 1st Supervisorial District race. Monahan shares my values; my commitment to financial responsibility, my longtime ethic of community service and my interest in the arts. He will serve all the people and be an accessible supervisor.

Monahan listens to every voice, of every age and every political persuasion. His interests are not special interests.

Monahan has spent the most time as a leader in government and civic affairs. He has been reappointed to committees and reelected. He is a distinguished leader yet unassuming.

Like generations of the Monahan family, he will reside in Ventura for life. He is concerned about his community and the quality of life.

From his experience on LAFCO [the Local Agency Formation Commission] to his leadership role as former mayor and community leader, Monahan has the breadth of experience to represent our district. I urge my supporters and the community at large to vote for Monahan for supervisor.

Corporate special interests such as Community Memorial Hospital and its associates are providing the largest amount of financial support for Monahan’s campaign for county supervisor. They support him because he has proven, over many years on the Ventura City Council and recently as a member of LAFCO, his willingness to disregard the welfare of the majority. The special interests have been able to rely on Monahan to aid them in their rapacious efforts to enrich themselves at the cost of the community.

Monahan’s long-delayed admission of his support for Measure O and his crucial LAFCO vote to permit tripling the size of Santa Paula are perfect examples of his self-serving disregard.

His opponent, Steve Bennett, limits campaign contributions to $500 per donor and refuses all money from developers.

Removing the influence of special-interest money is absolutely essential to assure that our elected representatives will be devoted to our interests, not to the special interests over ours.

Bennett does not accept donations over $500. A few years ago, he sponsored and succeeded in getting adoption of an initiative to limit contributions to Ventura City Council candidates to $100. The initiative was adopted by 80% of city voters.

Seeing how Bennett has limited his campaign donations and how Monahan has raised huge sums of money from special interests in this campaign, it’s not too hard to decide who to vote for for supervisor.
