Tustin Bowls Over Santa Ana, 71-7
Eighth-ranked Tustin used a relentless double-wing offense to roll past Santa Ana, 71-7, in a Golden West League game Friday night at Santa Ana Stadium.
The Tillers (7-1, 2-0) had nine running backs pile up 378 yards on the ground. Senior Frostee Rucker, who played for Santa Ana last season, rushed for 200 yards and three touchdowns in nine carries.
“There was a lot of emotion running in this game,” said Rucker, who last season helped the Saints to their first playoff appearance in 10 years. “I have a lot of friends on that team.”
Santa Ana (0-7, 0-3) gave the Tillers great field position on their first offensive series when Matt McCoy recovered a Saint fumble on the Santa Ana 35-yard line. On the ensuing play, Rucker blew past several defenders at the line of scrimmage and ran for the touchdown.
David Miller completed four of six pass attempts for 135 yards and three touchdowns, including a 42-yard touchdown pass to Chris Chester midway through the first quarter that gave the Tillers a 20-0 lead.
Tustin’s swarming defense, led by Matt McCoy, derailed Santa Ana’s offense in the first half, limiting the Saints to 67 total yards. The six-foot, 200-pound linebacker had four sacks for the Tillers.
