Toombs Is Doom for No. 10 Kansas State

Ja’Mar Toombs, Texas A&M;’s 275-pound fullback, plowed through Kansas State’s defense for three touchdowns as the Aggies defeat the No. 10 Wildcats, 26-10, Saturday at College Station, Texas.

The last time the two teams met, in the 1998 Big 12 Conference championship game, the Aggies rallied from a 15-point deficit to defeat Kansas State, 36-33, in overtime and knock the Wildcats out of a chance to play for the national championship.

This loss will knock the Wildcats out of Top 10 and also ended a string of 60 consecutive regular-season victories over unranked opponents.

The Wildcats didn’t make it interesting until the second half. Texas A&M; (6-2, 4-1 in the Big 12) jumped to a 19-0 lead, marking the first time in four years the Wildcats (7-2, 3-2) had been held scoreless in the first half.

Toombs had touchdown runs of two and eight yards and Terence Kitchens kicked field goals of 31 and 22 yards to give the Aggies their lead.

No. 22 Texas 48, Baylor 14--Major Applewhite threw for two touchdowns, ran for another and became the Longhorns’ career passing leader in a big victory over the Bears (2-6, 0-5) at Austin, Texas.

Despite misfiring on some passes and watching his receivers drop several others, Applewhite was 18 of 42 for 297 yards to pass James Brown as the career yardage leader with 7,810.

Kris Stockton kicked four field goals for Texas (6-2, 4-1), which has won three in a row since a 63-14 loss to Oklahoma.

Texas Tech 45, Kansas 39--Kliff Kingsbury threw four touchdown passes to Derek Dorris as the Red Raiders snapped a two-game losing streak with a victory over the Jayhawks (4-4, 2-3) at Lawrence, Kan.

The four touchdown catches were a career high for Dorris. He caught a five-yarder from Kingsbury in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead, then had touchdown catches of two and 11 yards in the second quarter as the Red Raiders (6-3, 2-3) built a 28-14 lead.

Colorado 37, Oklahoma State 21--Craig Ochs became the first player in Colorado history to run for a touchdown, throw for one and catch a pass for one in the same game as the Buffaloes (2-6, 2-3) defeated the Cowboys (2-5, 0-4) at Boulder, Colo.

Ochs, who took over as Colorado’s starting quarterback three weeks ago, finished with four touchdowns and broke the school’s single-season freshman passing record set by Koy Detmer.

Iowa State 39, Missouri 20--Ennis Haywood ran for 214 yards and two touchdowns and Marc Timmons returned an interception 78 yards for a score as the Cyclones (6-2, 3-2) defeated the Tigers (2-6, 1-4) to clinch their first winning regular season in 11 years.
