SAN DIEGO — Unlimited hydroplane driver George Stratton died Sunday from injuries suffered when his U-5 hydroplane flipped during a test run on San Diego’s Mission Bay.
The accident occurred during morning runs as Stratton, 44, of Las Vegas was coming out of the first corner of the course, the Unlimited Hydroplane Racing Association said in a statement.
No further details were available on his injuries.
Stratton had been a top powerboat racer for two decades, beginning in flat-bottomed boats before switching to hydroplanes.
Dave Villwock drove the Miss Budweiser to victory in the Bill Muncey Cup, the seventh and last race of the 2000 hydroplane series.
