Johannes Larsen; Oscar-Winning Art Director

Johannes “Tambi” Larsen, 86, Oscar-winning art director whose films ranged from Jerry Lewis comedies to dramas such as “Hud” and “Heaven’s Gate.” Larsen began his movie career as an assistant art director at Paramount Studios in 1946. He rose to art director in the 1953 Charlton Heston movie “The Secret of the Incas.” Two years later he earned the Academy Award for black and white art direction for “The Rose Tattoo,” which starred Anna Magnani. He later earned nominations for “Hud,” “The Spy Who Came In from the Cold,” “The Molly Maguires” and “Heaven’s Gate.” Born to Danish Lutheran missionaries in Bangalore, India, he studied stage design at Yale Drama School, married actress Barbara Dole and went on to create sets for several Broadway shows before working in films. During World War II, he worked for the Voice of America in London and broadcast the news of Germany’s surrender to fellow Danes. On March 24 in North Hollywood after a long illness.
