What Happened: Loren Woods scored five of Arizona’s first nine points and the Wildcats took an 11-6 lead. Things looked bleak for Duke when Jason Williams picked up his second foul with 15:21 left in the half and went to the bench. Both teams went cold late in the half. Two free throws by Arizona’s Gilbert Arenas tied the score at 33-33, but a jump shot by Williams gave Duke its halftime lead. Duke shot 42.9% from the field, Arizona only 33.3%.

What You Won’t Find in the Box Score: Williams almost picked up a third foul when he collided with Jason Gardner. It turned into a no-call, though, leaving usually mild-mannered Arizona Coach Lute Olson gesturing at the officials. Later there was some brutal body contact under the basket between Duke’s Shane Battier and Woods and again there was no whistle.

What Happened: Mike Dunleavy, a 6-foot-8 sophomore playing in front of his father, Portland Trail Blazer Coach Mike Dunleavy, put on quite a show. had three three-point shots during an 11-2 run that put the Blue Devils up, 50-39. Dunleavy finished with a team-high 21 points. Boozer, another sophomore, also had a big second half. He had seven rebounds in the final 20 minutes to finish with a team-high 12. Arizona pulled within 75-72 with 2:55 left when Richard Jefferson scored on a jump shot, but the Wildcats failed to score again as the Blue Devils pulled away.

What You Won’t Find in the Box Score: Arizona’s Loren Woods showed toughness in defeat. The stringbean center, often criticized for being soft, muscled his way to 22 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked four shots.
