Two Sewage Spills Close Docks, Beach

A pair of unrelated sewage spills Tuesday prompted the closure of two docks at Dana Point harbor and about 2,000 feet of shore in Laguna Beach.
The first spill occurred about 1 p.m. when a sewage line used by boaters emptying their tanks cracked and about 2 gallons of raw sewage was dumped into the water, according to Monica Mazur, a supervising environmental health specialist for Orange County.
Because of the spill, Mazur said, health authorities closed the guest slips and a dock at the north end of the harbor’s west basin to swimmers, an action likely to affect underwater boat-hull cleaners.
The second spill occurred a short time later, Mazur said, when a sewer line in Laguna Niguel broke after becoming clogged with roots. About 700 gallons of raw sewage flowed into Aliso Creek, forcing a beach closure 1,000 feet in both directions from the creek’s mouth in Laguna Beach.
Both closures are expected to last at least through Friday, Mazur said.
