Tapia’s Home Run Sparks Birmingham to 3-0 Victory

Lucio Tapia hit a home run and Birmingham High defeated Cleveland, 3-0, in a West Valley League baseball game Tuesday at Birmingham.

Tapia’s solo shot sparked a three-run fourth inning for the Patriots (10-4, 4-1 in league play).

Patrick Roark (4-0) pitched a four-hitter, struck out four, walked none and threw only 59 pitches for Birmingham.

Byron Grubman (4-2) struck out nine and walked one for Cleveland (10-5, 1-4).

Westlake 3, Notre Dame 1--Mike Nickeas had two hits and drove in a run for the Warriors (9-3-1) in a nonleague victory at Notre Dame.

Justin Blaine (5-1) struck out six, walked none and allowed four hits in six innings for Westlake, ranked No. 6 in the region by The Times.

Chatsworth 15, Taft 3--Jared Halpert had three hits for the Chancellors in a West Valley League victory at Taft.

Halpert’s two-run home run in the sixth gave Chatsworth (14-0, 5-0) an 11-2 lead.

Gregg Wallis and Ryan Barba each had two hits for the top-ranked Chancellors.

Chaminade 7, Loyola 2--Sean Clark (3-0) pitched a six-hitter, struck out 10 and walked two for the Eagles in a Mission League victory at Loyola.

Matt Hynick was three for three, scored three runs and stole two bases for Chaminade (9-2, 6-0), ranked No. 4.

Granada Hills 11, El Camino Real 3--Bobby Baca was four for four with two runs batted in in the Highlanders’ West Valley League victory at El Camino Real (7-5, 2-3), ranked No. 10 in the region.

Eddie Degerman (2-2) pitched a five-hitter, struck out 14 and walked three for Granada Hills (8-6, 2-3). Degerman, after walking the first batter, struck out the next nine.

Santa Barbara 12, Camarillo 5--Davey Komatsu, Delmon Young and Justin Frash each had two hits, but the No. 7-ranked Scorpions (10-4) lost a nonleague game at Santa Barbara.

Oxnard 5, San Marcos 2--Alex Merricks (3-2) threw a nine-inning four-hitter, struck out 18 and walked five for Oxnard (3-6) in a nonleague game at San Marcos.

The Yellowjackets parlayed four hits and a balk into a three-run ninth.

Grant 4, Poly 1--Chris Penta had three hits and two RBIs, and the Lancers (9-4, 3-0) took advantage of five errors in a Sunset Six League game at Poly (6-5-1, 2-1).

Moises Saldivar pitched a four-hitter, striking out three and walking five.

North Hollywood 7, Canoga Park 2--Edgar Robles threw a six-hitter, struck out four and walked one for the Huskies (8-9, 3-2) in a Sunset Six League game at Lanark Park in Canoga Park.

Crescenta Valley 16, Muir 5--Kyle Barrett had two doubles and two RBIs in a Pacific League game called after five innings because of the 10-run rule at Muir.

Bryan Rich had two hits and two RBIs for Crescenta Valley (8-3, 4-2), ranked No. 9.

Crespi 12, Alemany 2--Garett Tabarez went three for three with three RBIs for the Celts (7-5, 4-3) in a Mission League game called after six innings because of the 10-run rule at Crespi.

Armando Contreras, Damian Alonzo and Trevor Plouffe each had two hits and two RBIs in Crespi’s 14-hit attack.

Canyon 11, Burbank 1--Jake Coash (5-0) allowed one hit in four innings and struck out 10 for the Cowboys in a Foothill League victory at Canyon.

Josh LaGrotta had two hits and three RBIs, and Carlos Sanchez added two hits and two RBIs.

L.A. Baptist 10, Kilpatrick 0--Andrew Petersen allowed four hits and struck out eight for the Knights in an Alpha League victory at L.A. Baptist.

Brett Emma drove in three runs and Ryan Rycroft had two hits, scored two runs and knocked in two for the Knights (12-3, 3-0).
