Weight Manages to Save a Point for Edmonton

From Associated Press

Doug Weight’s goal with 48 seconds left in the game salvaged a 2-2 tie and one important point for the Edmonton Oilers Wednesday night in their home game against the Minnesota Wild.

Sergei Zholtok set up the third-period tying goal when he won a faceoff in the Minnesota end during a power play. Then Weight’s slap shot deflected off Minnesota’s Filip Kuba and got by goaltender Jamie McLennan.

Pavel Patera had given the Wild a 2-1 lead at 16:48 of the second period.

The tie gave Edmonton 91 points, one point ahead of sixth-place San Jose and two points ahead of the seventh-place Kings in the Western Conference playoff race. The Oilers, winless in four games, with two ties, have one game left.

Dallas 5, Nashville 1--Brett Hull scored his 39th goal and assisted on a goal by Mike Modano--each coming 13 seconds into power plays--as the host Stars won the franchise’s final regular-season game at Reunion Arena.

Dallas, which improved to 172-94-45 at the arena it has called home since moving from Minnesota in 1993-94, upped its season-best unbeaten streak to 12 games. It matches the second-longest streak in franchise history. Dallas also set an NHL record by not being outscored in 22 consecutive third periods, breaking the mark held by Winnipeg in 1989-90 and Quebec in 1980-81.

Boston 3, Buffalo 2--Jason Allison scored the eventual game-winner as the Bruins survived a late scare at Buffalo, N.Y., to remain tied for the Eastern Conference’s eighth and final playoff spot.

Carolina 3, New York Rangers 1--Jeff O’Neill had two goals and an assist, and Rod Brind’Amour had one of each as the Hurricanes snapped New York’s season-best four-game winning streak in the Rangers’ final home game of the season.

Pittsburgh 4, Tampa Bay 2--Jaromir Jagr, trying to win his fifth NHL scoring title, got his 50th and 51st goals in the third period to lead the Penguins to victory at Pittsburgh.

Jagr took Robert Lang’s short pass at the top of the right circle and snapped a shot past Kevin Weekes at 6:07 to put Pittsburgh up, 2-1, and assure himself a second 50-goal season.

Jagr scored his second goal about five minutes later, from almost the same spot on the opposite side of the ice. Jagr leads in points, 117-113, over Colorado’s Joe Sakic.

Toronto 4, New York Islanders 2--Darcy Tucker and Jonas Hoglund had a goal and an assist apiece for the host Maple Leafs.
