Times All-Sports Award Winter Update

University High didn’t win any Southern Section championships during the winter sports season, but that didn’t stop the Trojans from overtaking defending champion Newport Harbor in the large-school division of The Times’ Orange County All-Sports Awards.

Corona del Mar retained its lead in the small-school division, but not by the large margin it held at the end of the fall season when it led by 36 points. The Sea Kings are only 12 points ahead of Santa Margarita, which overtook Corona del Mar last year to win in this division.

The All-Sports award rewards county schools that have the most successful overall athletic programs. The scoring format awards points for a team’s playoff participation and finish. Gymnastics programs don’t earn points because there are no section-sanctioned playoffs in that sport.

Under the format, 20 points are awarded for winning a section title, 16 for finishing as a runner-up, 12 for reaching the semifinals, eight for reaching the quarterfinals and four for qualifying for the playoffs, wild-card berths included. No points are awarded for state playoff participation.

The cutoff point to determine large- and small-school categories was 2,000 students, excluding freshmen. Enrollment figures are based on those published in the Southern Section’s 2000-01 Directory of Member Schools.
