The Jazz Spot Orchestra’s Sunday afternoon residency at the Jazz Spot in Los Feliz is an effort to establish a Southland-based big jazz band comparable to Manhattan’s long-running Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Still a bit raw, still finding its own voice, the JSO is a project in the making, offering jazz fans an opportunity to hear a talented group of young individuals going through the process of molding themselves into a collective ensemble.

“Shifting Tides: Cuban Photography After the Revolution,” a new exhibition surveying the internationalized photographic art of recent years in Castro’s Cuba, opens at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The exhibition will examine the shifting sociopolitical and personal concerns that have inspired photographers in the past 40 years in Cuba, including Alberto Diaz Gutierrez (Korda), Osvaldo Salas, Rigoberto Romero, Marta Maria Perez Bravo, Jose Manuel Fors and Juan Carlos Alom.

The checkered past of Shane MacGowan is the order of the day: An autobiography titled “A Drink With Shane MacGowan” was recently published by Sidgwick & Jackson; his years with the Pogues are revived on a new retrospective album “The Very Best of the Pogues”; and Alex Cox’s 1987 film “Straight to Hell,” featuring MacGowan and company, is due soon on DVD. As for the present, the singer and his band the Popes hit town on a tour that has included some recording for a live album.

For those too old to chase colored eggs through the underbrush, the New Beverly Cinema presents a pair of Sergio Leone gunslingers. “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” the third film in the “Fistful of Dollars” series, stars Clint Eastwood as a scruffy, cheroot-chewing mercenary in a three-cornered treasure search against a Civil War backdrop. The most epic and lavish of the Leone-Eastwood collaborations, Eastwood’s “Good” is amusingly relative, Lee Van Cleef plays pure “Evil,” and Eli Wallach, corruptible “Ugly” humanity. A great horse opera, with music by Ennio Morricone. “Duck, You Sucker” (a.k.a. “A Fistful of Dynamite”), Leone’s 1972 take on the Mexican Revolution, stars Rod Steiger and James Coburn.
