Cal Selects Win 12-and-Under National Title in Hockey, 1-0

The Cal Selects defeated Assabet Valley, Mass., 1-0, in the USA Hockey girls’ 12-and-under national championship game in Blaine, Minn., on Sunday.

The Selects are based in Huntington Beach with seven players from the Valley/Ventura County region.

Heather Raymond of Bakersfield scored in the final and goaltender Jennifer Niesluchowski of Camarillo earned her second shutout of the tournament with 30 saves.

Megan Niesluchowski, Jennifer’s twin, Alyssa Wohlfeiler of Santa Clarita and Raymond scored in a 3-1 victory over Chelmsford, Mass., in a semifinal.

Allison Inouye of Northridge and Raymond scored in a 2-0 victory over Roseville, Minn., in the first round of pool play. Olivia Jakiel of Santa Clarita had an assist.

Assabet Valley defeated the Selects, 4-1, in the second round of pool play as Anna Ugarte of Woodland Hills scored.

The Selects qualified for the semifinals with a 3-2 victory over Syracuse, N.Y., in the third round of pool play. Megan Niesluchowski scored twice.

Michelle Panzica of Simi Valley appeared in all five games as a defenseman.

GOLF

* Lost Canyons Golf Club in Simi Valley officially opens its second 18-hole layout, the Shadow Course, on Saturday.

The Sky Course, the first of two designed by Pete Dye with Fred Couples as a consultant, opened in November and was designated the best new course in America by Golf magazine.

However, the staff at Lost Canyons believes Couples might favor the Shadow Course, because the 1992 Masters champion has played it the last three times he has been on the property.

As part of the opening day festivities, representatives of eight equipment manufacturers will be displaying their wares on the practice range and there will be a barbecue lunch.

TENNIS

* Philip Sheng of Thousand Oaks, Prakash Amritraj of Encino and Lester Cook of Sherman Oaks are among the top players competing in the Easter Bowl Junior Tennis Championships today through April 19 at the Riviera Resort and Racquet Club in Palm Springs.

Sheng, a senior at Thousand Oaks High, is the third-seeded player in the boys’ 18 division.

Amritraj, who attended Harvard-Westlake last year but is being home-schooled during his senior year, just returned from a tennis tour of the Philippines on Monday and is seeded fifth in the boys’ 18 division.

Cook, who attends Bridges Academy in Sherman Oaks, is seeded eighth in boys’ 18s.

Jesse Ferlianto of Harvard-Westlake, Stephen Amritraj of Crespi and Robert Yim of Glendale will be competing in boys’ 18s.

Justin Montgomery of Oxnard is seventh-seeded in the boys’ 16 division and Sam Querrey of Thousand Oaks is competing in the boys’ 14 division.

Brooke Borisoff, who transferred from Agoura High to an Ojai tennis academy this year, is seeded No. 24 in girls’ 18s. Others competing include Jessica Leck of Harvard-Westlake, Nina Yaftali of Westlake, Jenny Munroe of Hart, Ojai resident Lori Stern of Cate School in Carpinteria and Erica Sauer of Somis.

Sonya Reynolds of Palmdale, Daron Moore of Campbell Hall and Erin Everly of Calabasas will play in girls’ 16s.

In girls’ 14s, Mykala Hedberg of Oxnard is No. 24, Amanda Fink of Calabasas is No. 25, Celia Durkin of Calabasas is 27th and Jessica Nguyen of Chatsworth is 29th.
