Chatsworth Takes First With Zero Tolerance
Sean Richards pitched a one-hitter and Chatsworth High won the Las Vegas Bishop Gorman tournament on Saturday with a 6-0 pool-play victory over Arapahoe of Littleton, Colo.
Richards (3-0), No. 4 pitcher in the rotation, struck out nine and recorded the Chancellors’ third shutout of the tournament.
Freshman Jason Dominguez (6-0) threw a two-hitter with seven strikeouts in a 6-0 pool-play victory over Orange earlier in the day.
Chatsworth (20-0), ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times, won the tournament by allowing the fewest runs--four--in four games. The Chancellors also tied the school record of 20 consecutive victories set last season.
Sophomore catcher Jordan Sisson, playing in place of Danny Dominguez, had a run-scoring double against Arapahoe and hit a two-run home run, a double and a two-run single against Orange.
Dominguez was out with a sprained ankle. Sisson was brought up from the junior varsity.
Poly 10, Kennedy 1--Eddie Baeza pitched a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts and the Parrots (13-5) won a Bishop Gorman tournament game.
Kennedy (12-9), defending City Section champion, lost all four games in the tournament.
Crespi 4, Downey 0--Dale Legaspi’s leadoff home run was all the Celts needed in a St. Paul tournament first-round game at Downey (8-9).
Trevor Plouffe (3-1) allowed two hits in five innings with five strikeouts and one walk. Legaspi and Jonathan Oller each pitched one inning of relief.
Peter Fanning had two hits, including a triple, and Sean Lyons had two hits for Crespi (9-6).
Moorpark 10, Saddleback 2--Evan Seibley allowed no hits and struck out 10 in 4 1/3 innings for the Musketeers (10-5) at the Corona Del Mar tournament.
HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL
Westlake 2, La Canada 2--Westlake (9-5-3) won the Silver Bracket championship of the San Fernando Valley tournament on total bases, 1-0, at Hjelte Park.
After seven innings of regulation finished in a 2-2 tie, a one-inning tiebreaker was played with each team choosing three hitters and one baserunner. Westlake won a coin flip and elected to be the home team after playing seven innings as the visitor.
Courtney Dickins of La Canada (10-1-1) was caught stealing in the top half of the inning, effectively giving the victory to Westlake because the deciding factor was total bases in the tiebreaker.
All three Westlake batters chose not to swing and struck out looking in the bottom half.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Pepperdine 11, Loyola Marymount 0--Noah Lowry and Dustin Decker combined on a five-hitter and Danny Garcia had three hits and four RBIs for the Waves (26-12, 14-3) in a West Coast Conference game at Loyola Marymount.
UC Santa Barbara 12, Cal State Northridge 3--Robert Smith had three hits for the Matadors (24-15, 2-4 in the Big West Conference) but the Gauchos (27-10, 2-1) hit four home runs to win the final game of the series at Northridge.
Cal Lutheran 12-14, La Verne 3-6--Steve Maitland hit a school-record four home runs in the second game and had seven hits in 10 at-bats in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference sweep at Cal Lutheran.
