Outfielder Joe Borchard of Camarillo High was named the double-A Southern League’s player of the week for April 5-12. Borchard, the Chicago White Sox’s first-round pick last June, batted .375 (12 for 32) with five runs batted in for the Birmingham Barons. Former Hart pitcher Chris Baker was selected the league’s pitcher of the week after going 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA in two starts for the Tennessee Smokies, a Toronto Blue Jay affiliate . . . Nathan Kaup of Camarillo was promoted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays last week, moving from Charleston of the South Atlantic League to Bakersfield of the California League . . . Catcher Bobby Hughes, formerly of Notre Dame High, was released by the Baltimore Orioles last week. Hughes had signed with Baltimore after being released by the New York Yankees in spring training.
