Santa Ana Softball Team Moves Into First-Place Tie
Deanna Miranda had four hits and scored two runs as Santa Ana defeated host Golden West, 8-1, in an Orange Empire Conference softball game Friday.
Santa Ana (32-11-1, 16-4) moved into a first-place tie in the conference standings with Fullerton. Both teams have one game remaining in the regular season, with Fullerton (31-9-1, 16-4) holding the advantage for postseason seeding by winning two of its three meetings with the Dons.
Marie Caballero and Wendi Kralich each went two for three with two runs for Santa Ana, which collected 13 hits.
In another conference game:
Cypress 3, Fullerton 0--Erica Duncan capped a three-run first inning for Cypress (28-15, 14-6) with a two-out, two-run double. Mikki Greenwood gave up three consecutive singles to Fullerton in the seventh, but left the bases loaded and won her 20th game of the year.
In Orange Empire Conference men’s golf:
Saddleback 363, Palomar 365, Santa Ana 383, Cypress 416--Kevin Olson and Greg Lopez each shot one-under-par 71 at El Prado to lead Saddleback (16-0). Palomar’s Anthony Wasano was medalist with a 70.
In nonconference men’s swimming:
Fullerton 57, Rio Hondo 30--Fullerton’s David Foulds won two events and anchored the Hornets’ winning 400-yard freestyle relay team.
James Foley also won two events for Fullerton.
In nonconference women’s swimming:
Fullerton 69, Rio Hondo 11--Nicole Gigante, Emily Shuler and Ann Valdivia each won two events for Fullerton.
Gigante won the 200 individual medley (2:32.69) and the 100 butterfly (1:12.66), Shuler the 50 freestyle (28.88) and the 100 freestyle (1:02.93), and Valdivia the 500 freestyle (6:34.48) and the 100 backstroke (1:15.63).
