A Month for Fair Housing
April is Fair Housing Month, and real estate salespeople across the country are working in their communities to help increase awareness about the importance of ensuring fair housing opportunities for everyone, according to the National Assn. of Realtors.
This year marks the 33rd anniversary of the enactment of the Fair Housing Law, Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, aimed at eliminating housing discrimination. The monthlong effort will highlight how the law, as amended, prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, creed, national origin, sex, familial status and handicap.
“The federal fair housing act protects one of our most important civil rights: the right to housing free from discrimination,” said Richard A. Mendenhall, association president. “As Realtors, we are in a perfect position to take a leading role in finding solutions to housing problems in our communities.”
The association recently cooperated with several minority-based housing groups to launch the HOPE (Home Ownership Participation for Everyone) Awards, a national program developed to promote minority homeownership, Mendenhall said.
