‘Glass Burka’
Re “Let Eve Take Her Place at the Table,” Commentary, Dec. 20: Robert McElvaine’s pertinent commentary serves as a necessary reminder that we, as “free” Western women, are still fettered by the misogynist myths of religious misinterpretation and, probably, age-old mistranslation. Eve still bears that mantle of shame, but no one inquires as to the gender of the insidious serpent (Freud might have a few thoughts on that one).
While we American women cannot begin to compare our frustrating limitations to the dreadful suffering of our burka-smothered sisters, I think it would prove unifying and empowering to the world sisterhood to replace the aging phrase “glass ceiling” with “glass burka.” Most of us are still peeping out from behind various exclusionary screens.
