Canyons Turns Back Valley With Second Effort, 66-62

College of the Canyons needed a strong second half to defeat Valley, 66-62, in a Western State Conference Southern Division women’s basketball game Wednesday night at Canyons.

After making only 11 of 43 shots in the first half, Canyons, the highest-scoring team in the state, made 17 of 31 shots in the second half.

Vonetta Lanier scored 18 points, including 12 in the second half for Canyons (21-6, 8-0), which trailed at halftime, 36-29.

Michelle Tompkins scored 17 points for Valley (19-11, 3-4).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Valley 69, Canyons 60--Neverson White scored 19 points and the Monarchs overcame a seven-point deficit with seven minutes remaining for a WSC Southern Division victory at Canyons.

Mike Crawford added 13 points and four steals for Valley (18-10, 7-1).

Nana Gbewonyo had 15 points for Canyons (9-17, 4-4).

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Canyons 5, Victor Valley 2--Stephanie Blaire pitched a six-hitter with six strikeouts for the Cougars in their opener at Victo Valley.

Monique Abourched had three hits, including a run-scoring double for Canyons.

Valley 6, Irvine Valley 1--Blair Blakeley drove in four runs with two hits for the Monarchs in a nonconference game at Irvine Valley.

Angela Nunez added two hits and scored twice.

Melissa Rodriguez pitched a one-hitter with six strikeouts and two walks for Valley (1-0-1).

BOYS’ SOCCER

Quartz Hill 7, Antelope Valley 1--Seven players scored for the Rebels (20-2-1, 7-0) in a Golden League game at Antelope Valley.

Crespi 5, Alemany 0--Twins Aaron and Andrew Magpali scored in the first half for the Celts in a Mission League game at Alemany.

Newbury Park 3, Simi Valley 0--Jon Krupansky’s 24th goal of the season helped the Panthers (14-4-2, 6-1-1) move into first place in the Marmonte League.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Chaminade 6, Notre Dame 0--Lauren Nussbaum had three goals and Kim Taylor added two for the Eagles (14-4-2, 6-0) in a Mission League game at Notre Dame.

Westlake 4, Royal 0--Katie McCurdy and Sara Silver-Hill each scored twice and the Warriors (12-0-3, 8-0) moved to within one victory of the Marmonte League title.

The Highlanders (3-12-3, 1-6-1) did not have a shot on goal.
