Arizona State Upsets Oregon

Melody Johnson scored 20 points and freshman Betsy Boardman added 19 as Arizona State defeated No. 22 Oregon, 73-63, in a Pacific 10 Conference game Saturday at Tempe, Ariz.

The win was the sixth in a row for the Sun Devils (15-6), who moved into first place in the Pac-10 with a 7-2 record.

Oregon (12-7, 5-4), which trailed, 39-34, at halftime, overcame foul trouble early in the second half and closed within 49-47 on Lindsey Dion’s breakaway layup with 11:56 left.

Boardman made a jump shot, one free throw and a three-pointer with 2:28 left to put Arizona State ahead, 69-57.

Amanda Johnson scored the Sun Devils’ first six points and 10 of the team’s first 13. She scored 14 of her 18 points in the first half.

Jamie Craighead led the Ducks with 17 points. Dion added 13.

LaKeisha Taylor scored 20 points and Reshea Bristol and Elizabeth Pickney each scored 19 to lead Arizona past Oregon State, 83-73, at Tucson.

The Beavers (11-8, 3-6) cut a 12-point lead to 74-72 with 2:39 left, but Arizona (16-5, 6-3) rallied over the final two minutes. Four points, a blocked shot and an assist from Pickney helped put the Beavers away.

Arizona Coach Joan Bonvicini, a former Long Beach State coach, got her 500th career victory.

No. 1 Notre Dame 81, Boston College 65--The Fighting Irish (21-0, 10-0) set a school record with their 21st consecutive victory behind Ruth Riley’s 24 points and 13 rebounds in a Big East Conference game against the Eagles ((8-13, 2-8) at Boston.

Notre Dame trailed only at 6-4 and took its biggest lead, 79-60, on Riley’s last point, a free throw with 1:28 left.

No. 7 Louisiana Tech 71, South Alabama 46--Takeisha Lewis scored 11 points and Kristie McClain added 10 for the Lady Techsters in a Sunbelt Conference victory over the Lady Jaguars at Ruston, La.

Brooke Lassiter led Louisiana Tech (19-4, 10-0) with 15 points. Jessica Webb led South Alabama (11-10, 4-6) with 14 points and six rebounds.

No. 10 Oklahoma 82, Missouri 62--LaNeishea Caufield scored 20 of her 28 points in the second half for the Sooners (17-4, 8-1) in a Big 12 Conference victory over the Tigers (13-7, 4-5) at Norman, Okla.

Stacey Dales scored 11 points and had nine assists for Oklahoma. Tracy Franklin led Missouri with 11 points.

No. 12 Texas Tech 92, Texas A&M; 79--Plenette Pierson scored 25 points to help the Lady Raiders extend their home winning streak to 41 games at Lubbock, Texas.

Texas Tech (17-3, 8-1) used a 15-8 run in the final four minutes to seal the Big 12 victory over the Aggies.

No. 13 Southwest Missouri State 81, Illinois St. 69--Jackie Stiles, the nation’s leading scorer, had 32 points and Tara Mitchem added 24 as the Bears (16-4, 10-1) overcame a seven-point deficit at halftime in the Missouri Valley Conference victory over the Redbirds (4-16, 2-9) at Normal, Ill.

No. 18 Utah 59, Air Force 29--Lauren Beckman scored 16 points for the Utes (18-2, 7-0), who won their seventh game in a row with the Mountain West Conference victory over the Falcons (3-17, 0-7) at Colorado.

No. 23 Colorado 85, No. 20 Baylor 66--Britt Hartshorn scored 17 points and Mandy Nightingale had 15 to lead the Buffaloes over the Bears (15-6, 4-6) in a Big 12 victory at Boulder, Colo.

Eisha Bohman scored 13 points and Tara Bjorklund added 11 for Colorado (15-5, 6-3).

Kansas 70, No. 21 Texas 60--Brooke Reves had 22 points and 14 rebounds for the Jayhawks (9-11, 3-6) in a Big 12 win over the Longhorns (16-7, 4-5) at Austin.

Selena Scott added 15 points for Kansas, which ended the Longhorns’ four-game home win streak.
