Actor on Racism

Thank you for the essay by actor Ossie Davis regarding racism in America (“A Letter to My Country,” Commentary, Feb. 18). I look forward to future articles by multimillionaire black entertainment figures and athletes describing how the mostly white fans, audiences and corporations are oppressing them with money.
We have problems in this country. Some of them are the result of white bigotry and some due to black bigotry. I won’t even mention the prejudices of Hispanic and Asian Americans. But the majority of Americans are fair-minded, decent people of all colors. Davis’ attempt to paint the whole country as racist is insulting. Blacks are prominent in all fields; Colin Powell could have been elected president with a nod of his head. It does America a disservice to constantly beat the drum of “us against them.” It is particularly disturbing coming from someone who owes part of his success to colorblind white audiences.
