Calvary Chapel Masters State Qualifying
As expected, Santa Ana Calvary Chapel cruised through the Southern Section Masters wrestling meet Saturday at Fountain Valley High, crowning six champions and advancing a record 10 wrestlers to the state finals next week.
“I doesn’t get any easier. And the pressure is tremendous,” said Calvary Chapel Coach John Azevedo, whose previous best was nine state qualifiers in 1994.
State finals start Friday at the University of Pacific at Stockton.
While team scoring is downplayed in the two-day Masters tournament, Calvary Chapel scored 239.5 points, 144 points ahead of second-place Temecula Valley.
Calvary Chapel’s Mario Estrada (103 pounds), Anthony Rodriquez (112), Steve Esparza (130), Frank Gill (135), Willie Parks (171) and Conan Williams (189) won titles.
“I’ll be celebrating with lots of deserts tonight,” said Gill, who defeated Mike Sifuentes of Indio, 1-0.
Williams pinned defending state champion Chris Lopez of Covina Northview in 5 minutes 56 seconds and Parks won by technical fall over Ty Blair of Dana Hills.
Josh Galvan of Anaheim Loara won the 119-pound title, defeating Troy Elam of Downey, 11-0.
Brian LeMay of Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley won the 145-pound title with a 6-1 victory over top-seeded Josh O’Hara of Redlands East Valley.
Santa Ana’s Hugo Guzman (103), Ozvaldo Avalos (152) and Wyatt Howard (189) also won titles.
Other titlists were Tommy Vargas of San Bernardino Pacific (125), Angelo Lago of Temecula Valley (140), Greg Smith of Lake Arrowhead Rim of the World (160), Allen Kennet of Lakewood Mayfair (215) and heavyweight Lionel Apeniru of Barstow.
