* Coach Jon Mack of St. Bonaventure will coach California in the CaliFlorida Bowl on June 23 at Santa Barbara City College.
Seniors from the region selected to play on the California team are quarterback Kyle Matter of Hart, linebacker Josh Martin of Sylmar, defensive back John Walker of Birmingham, defensive linemen Kaelen Jakes of Valencia and Mike Bonelli of St. Bonaventure and running back Tyler Ebell of Ventura.
BASKETBALL
* Guard Devin Montgomery of Moorpark College and forward Jerome Edwards of Canyons were selected Western State Conference players of the week in the Northern and Southern divisions, respectively.
Montgomery had 45 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in two games. Edwards had 28 points and 30 rebounds in two games.
* The Harlem Globetrotters will play a charity game at Valencia High on Feb. 26.
Admission is $22 for adults and $18 for senior citizens and children under 13. A limited number of VIP mid-court seats are $30, including parking.
Proceeds will benefit the Valencia boys’ basketball program and the Santa Clarita Valley Special Olympics. Information: (661) 252-6916.
* Chaminade Middle School won the Paul Muff Catholic Grammar School championship at Crespi on Monday, defeating Our Lady of Perpetual Hope, 50-21, in the final.
Matt Divenchenzo of Chaminade was named tournament most valuable player after scoring 16 points in the final. Teammate Kevin Hufford was all-tournament, along with Shane Poppen of St. Paschal.
BASEBALL
* Howie Schwartzer, a long-time local baseball coach who worked as a scout for the Detroit Tigers, died last Thursday of cancer. He was 68. Schwartzer coached hundreds of players, primarily in summer leagues.
* Jody Breeden, a long-time American Legion coach, has been hired as an assistant coach at Notre Dame.
TENNIS
* Lester Cook of Sherman Oaks advanced to the round of 16 at the Australian Hardcourt Championships on Monday.
Cook, 16, defeated Sunil Kumar Sapaeya of India, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
MISCELLANY
* Pacifica High of Oxnard, scheduled to open in August, will be known as the Tritons, with colors of forest green, black and white.
The nickname and colors were selected by prospective Pacifica students from junior highs and by freshmen student leaders from Oxnard and Rio Mesa. Other nicknames considered were Titans, Marlins, Barracudas and Seahawks.
