Basque Separatists Suspected in Bombing

SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain — A bomb attached to a car exploded Friday, killing a Spanish navy cook and injuring five people in the first fatal attack of the year blamed on the Basque separatist group ETA.
The blast took place at 7:40 a.m., a police spokesman said. He said the bomb was attached to the car of Ramon Diaz Garcia, 51, a cook who worked in navy headquarters in this Basque region city. He was married with two children.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the bombing, but police blamed ETA, which has killed about 800 people since it began fighting for an independent Basque state in 1968.
