Protestant, 18, Killed, Apparently in Error

Gunmen trying to stir up hatred with Northern Ireland’s Roman Catholic community promised more bloodshed after killing a Protestant teenager standing with his Catholic friends.
Police and politicians said Gavin Brett’s killers wrongly assumed the 18-year-old, like others outside a sports club Sunday, was Catholic.
An extremist anti-Catholic gang, the Red Hand Defenders, claimed responsibility for the attack. It offered no apology for killing one of its community’s own and warned that its terror campaign would continue, saying, “God save Ulster!”
