In what he called “the best fight he’s had,” Huntington Beach cruiserweight Jesse Reid Jr. scored a split decision over Charles Wilson of Compton in the main event Thursday night at the Sequoia Conference Center in Buena Park.
“It was a good learning fight for me,” Reid said after improving to 10-0. “I’m glad it was a tough fight. I’m glad it went eight rounds. I want to start getting the experience and getting up there with the big guys.”
Referee Tony Crebs took a point away from Reid on all three judges’ cards for hitting Wilson after the bell to end the sixth round.
In earlier bouts, Ceasar Avila (7-3-1) of Buena Park lost a six-round middleweight split decision to Charles Blake (6-1-1) of Vista, despite knocking Blake down in the third round, the fight’s only knockdown.
Glendale College student William Adamyan (4-0) scored a six-round unanimous decision over Lavelle Nichols (2-1) of San Bernardino in a junior-welterweight bout.
Tony Cox (2-0) of Compton knocked Sal Farnetti (0-1) down twice in the first round, then was declared the winner by knockout when Farnetti was unable to continue after crumbling to the canvas 1 minute 21 seconds into the first round because of what one of his cornermen later called a sprained left ankle.
Alan Skrijel (1-1) of Sacramento knocked down Phillip Gill (0-1) of Long Beach in the second and third rounds to win a unanimous decision in a four-round welterweight bout. Freddie Castro (1-2-1) of Mexico opened the card by stopping Pierre Chambliss 2:39 into the first round of their scheduled four-round featherweight bout.
