Landlord Gets 40 Years to Life for Slaying Tenant

A Lancaster landlord who shot his tenant to death was sentenced Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court to 40 years to life in prison.
Alvan Adams, 50, was convicted of second-degree murder for the February 2000 slaying of ranch hand Eugene Rufus Newbern, 41, at Adams’ house in the 3300 block of East Avenue K-4, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Robert Sherwood.
Adams had been trying to evict Newbern, sheriff’s deputies said.
