NEW YORK — A man wanted in a series of cross-country crimes was killed Friday during a wild shootout with an FBI agent and other officers in the lobby of a Times Square hotel.
Maghfoor Mansoor, 35, was shot at the Hampshire Hotel and Suites after being confronted by members of a joint task force of New York detectives, FBI agents and U.S. marshals, Assistant FBI Director Barry Mawn said. No officers were seriously injured.
“I saw a little bit of blood on the carpet in the lobby,” said Joaquin Asencio, whose family was staying at the hotel after arriving from Spain to attend his graduation from New York University.
He said some family members thought they heard what may have been gunshots, but “they thought it was the television.”
Mansoor, convicted in 1996 of sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl, was wanted by the FBI for fleeing while being prosecuted on charges of sexually assaulting and kidnapping a 17-year-old girl at gunpoint in Las Vegas.
