‘Swan Lake,’ ‘La Bayadere’ at OCPAC in 2002

A new production of “Swan Lake” and the four-act version of “La Bayadere” danced by the Bolshoi Ballet will highlight the 2002 classic dance season sponsored by the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa.

For the first time, the center also will present a dance company in its 250-seat Founders Hall with Spain’s Noche Flamenca, June 27-30.

American Ballet Theatre will open the Segerstrom Hall series, Feb. 12-17 with its new “Swan Lake,” staged by company artistic director Kevin McKenzie. The production was premiered last year.

ABT will return to close the season, Dec. 17-22, with the “Nutcracker” ballet, also staged by McKenzie.

San Francisco Ballet will dance its new “Othello,” choreographed by Lar Lubovitch, Sept. 27-29. The ballet, which was premiered in 1997 by ABT, was co-commissioned by San Francisco Ballet and ABT in collaboration with the New York-based Lar Lubovitch Dance Company. The work is set to a score by Elliot Goldenthal.

San Francisco Ballet also will dance a program of shorter works, to be announced, Sept. 25-26.

The Bolshoi Ballet will present its four-act “La Bayadere,” Nov. 26-29. The 1877 work, in its familiar three-act version, was just seen at OCPAC in Rudolf Nureyev’s staging for Paris Opera Ballet.

Originally, the ballet also had a final scene of the gods destroying the temple and killing everyone during the sacrilegious marriage of Solor and Gamzatti. The Bolshoi’s current version will include that scene. The company also will dance a program of shorter works, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1.
