James Ledford, who was reelected to his sixth term as mayor of Palmdale on Tuesday, filed papers the same day to run for the 36th Assembly District seat.
Ledford said Wednesday that if he wins the state seat, he will give up the mayor’s chair 10 months early, in January 2003.
“I just think I’m the best person to represent this district,” he said.
The Assembly seat is being vacated by Republican George Runner because of term limits.
Ledford will face three GOP candidates in the March 5 primary: Runner’s wife, Sharon; Palmdale Mayor Pro Tem Mike Dispenza; and nonprofit director Ollie McCaulley, county clerk spokeswoman Grace Chavez said. No Democrats had filed declarations of intent by Wednesday afternoon.
The 36th Assembly District includes Santa Clarita, Lancaster and Palmdale.
